Superintendent's Weekly Memo - October, 4 2024

Superintendent's Weekly Memo - October, 4 2024
Dr. Marice Edouard-Vincent, Superintendent

Dear Mustang Families,

Earlier today I sent out an important water safety message to the Medford Community after lead was detected following water sampling. Please note, all filtered bottle filling stations were tested and are safe to drink from. Visit Here to read the full communication and next steps the district is taking.

While our beautiful New England trees ramp up their transition from summer green to fall foliage, our students are well underway into the new school year. Our Mustangs have already taken their first tests and completed assignments. Just as importantly, they’ve also had the opportunity to meet new student peers, connect with their teachers, and create new memories.

An unforgettable experience occurred for one of our Medford High School students earlier this week. Senior Shayan Chowdhury was honored at the Harvard Book Prize Breakfast alongside other student scholars from New England for his outstanding academic performance last year. Attendees were not only greeted by senior administrators but also a delicious morning meal. Congratulations to Shayan for earning this incredible achievement!

This Sunday, our Brooks Elementary School will be hosting their annual fall fest! This beloved annual event, held from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m., is a fantastic way to embrace the spirit of the season and support our school community. With an array of exciting games, food, rides, crafts, an enticing silent auction, and a chance to win big in the raffle, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Visit Here to learn more.

Next Thursday, Oct. 10 will be World Mental Health Day. I am thankful Medford Public Schools are able to provide resources to students, families and staff surrounding this important topic. Let's encourage open conversations, support one another, and continue to create a world where we prioritize mental health. Together, we can break the stigma and foster a community of understanding and compassion.

October is also Down Syndrome Awareness and Dyslexia Awareness Month. This October, let’s come together to raise awareness and celebrate the unique strengths of our community. MPS staff members are here to support all students and families working to reach their educational goals.

Today’s Memo includes:

Fan & Parking Rules For Tonight’s Football Game

We are very excited to cheer on Mustang Nation tonight vs Somerville High School! The game will kickoff at 6 p.m. and will be hosted at Tufts University’s Zimman Field. Our football team earned victory last time they took the field, and we hope to keep the momentum going.

Fan and parking rules will look different than other games this season. Visit Here to see the protocols ahead of tonight’s game.

McGlynn Playground Ribbon Cutting Ceremony To Be Held Next Tuesday

I want to remind everyone that we will be hosting our ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new, universally accessible McGlynn Elementary School playground on Tuesday, Oct. 8, at 3:30 p.m. Families are invited to celebrate and play on the new playground following the ceremony.

Students at the MES took full advantage of the opportunity to enjoy recess on the new playground this week. All of the new features were being used, including the inclusive non-transfer wheelchair swing and spinner; the different-sized basketball hoops; and the field space, among other new playground equipment.

Visit Here for further information about the universally accessible McGlynn Playground and the ribbon-cutting ceremony on Oct. 8.

Increased Pay Rates For Substitute Teachers

Effective October 1, our substitute teacher rates have increased! Daily substitute teachers will now be paid $120 per day, and our long-term substitute teaching rates have also grown.

The valuable work of substitute teachers is felt every day in our schools, and we believe this change reflects the positive impact they make for our students. Join our substitute teachers team today!

Job Openings
